The old town fills two or three days easily. After that, Tainan's best surprises are out of town: salt flats and oyster lagoons on the coast, a mud hot spring and coffee farms in the hills, and tea country just over the line in Chiayi. Here is every day trip on the site, with rough drive times from the old town. Nearly all of them work best with a car, a scooter or a hired driver.
Along the coast
The Qigu salt coast. A mountain of salt you can climb, Taiwan's oldest surviving salt fields at sunset, and a mangrove boat ride on the way home. About an hour north. → Qigu salt coast
Qigu oyster lagoon tour. A bamboo raft out to the oyster racks and a sandbar, then freshly grilled oysters at the water's edge. Book ahead; times follow the tides. About an hour. → Qigu oyster tour
Xingda Harbor fish market. A working fishing port just over the Kaohsiung line, with sashimi off the boats and a fish auction at dusk. About 45 minutes to an hour down the coast. → Xingda fish market
Into the hills
Guanziling hot springs. Taiwan's only mud hot spring, plus the Water-Fire Cave, where a flame burns on top of spring water. Best from October to March. About an hour. → Guanziling
Dongshan 175 Coffee Road. Tainan's own coffee country, where growers pour the cup and sell the beans. Pairs well with Guanziling. About 1.5 hours. → Dongshan coffee road
Further afield, in Chiayi
Tea farms in the Alishan foothills. Pick and roll tea, see it processed, taste it and buy it from the family that grew it. Every session needs a booking. About two hours each way. → Tea near Tainan
Ching Ye Coffee Estate. The Ruili farm whose Gesha placed fifth at Taiwan's 2025 Cup of Excellence and went to Blue Bottle. A full day of mountain driving; check with the estate before you go. → Chiayi coffee estate
Putting them together
Some of these pair naturally. Qigu's Salt Mountain and the oyster boats are about 10 minutes apart, so they make one coastal day. Guanziling and the Dongshan coffee road sit in the same northeast hills. The Chiayi tea and coffee farms share mountain roads, but each is a long drive, so pick one per day. → The 3-day plan
