Tainan's great temples sit close together in the West Central old town, and a morning on foot links the most important of them. Start at the Confucius Temple when it opens at 08:30, loop north through the City God and the Jade Emperor, then finish at the cluster on Yongfu Road, where the God of War and Mazu stand side by side, with Chihkan Tower a short walk away. That's a calm half day. Add lunch and a second loop and it fills a full day.
All the temples on this route are working places of worship. Dress modestly, step over the raised thresholds rather than on them, and give people who are praying plenty of room. → Temples guide and temple etiquette
08:30: Confucius Temple
Begin at the Confucius Temple (孔子廟), founded in 1665 and known as the First Academy of Taiwan (全臺首學). Red walls, old trees and a hush that the rest of the route won't have. Since 30 January 2026 the whole compound is ticketed: NT$70, NT$35 concession, free for Tainan residents.
- Hours: 08:30 to 17:20 daily, last tickets 17:00; closed on Lunar New Year's Eve
- Address: No. 2, Nanmen Rd, West Central District
By the temple, the little lane of Fuzhong Street is lined with cafes and craft shops if you want a coffee before moving on.
09:30: City God Temple
Walk north-east to the City God Temple (臺灣府城隍廟) on Qingnian Road, built in 1669 and described by the city as Taiwan's oldest City God temple. The City God keeps a tally of everyone's good and bad deeds, and the temple is full of that theme: a giant abacus from 1937 for doing the sums, and the famous plaque 爾來了, roughly "so, you've finally come."
- Hours: 06:00 to 21:00 daily
10:15: Temple of Heaven
Head west to the Temple of Heaven (天壇), tucked down a lane off Zhongyi Road. Built in 1854 and dedicated to the Jade Emperor, it's busy with daily worship. Look up for the celebrated one-character plaque (一字匾), one of the most famous in Tainan.
- Hours: 06:00 to 21:00 daily
- Address: No. 16, Lane 84, Sec. 2, Zhongyi Rd, West Central District
10:45: Official God of War Temple and Grand Mazu Temple
A short walk north brings you to Yongfu Road. The Official God of War Temple (祀典武廟), built around 1665, is dedicated to Guan Gong and has the long red wall that's one of Tainan's best-known sights. Inside, look for the 1791 plaque reading Da Zhang Fu, "man of character."
Next door, the Grand Mazu Temple (大天后宮) was the mansion of the Ming prince Ning Jing until 1683, when the Qing turned it into a temple to Mazu, the sea goddess. The city calls it the first government-established Mazu temple in Taiwan.
- Official God of War Temple: 05:30 to 21:00 daily. No. 229, Sec. 2, Yongfu Rd
- Grand Mazu Temple: 06:00 to 21:00 daily
11:30: Kaiji Wumiao, then Chihkan Tower
Close by, on narrow Xinmei Street, Kaiji Wumiao (開基武廟) is a smaller Guan Gong temple from the days when boats could still reach the city center. Its bell has hung there since 1858. Then walk on to Chihkan Tower (赤崁樓) to finish the morning.
- Kaiji Wumiao: 07:00 to 21:00 daily. No. 116, Xinmei St
- Chihkan Tower: 08:30 to 21:30 daily; NT$70, half price NT$35, free for Tainan residents with ID
Lunch
From here it's a short walk to the food streets around Guohua Street and Yongle Market. → Food crawl
Making it a full day
- Koxinga Shrine. After lunch, visit the Koxinga Shrine (延平郡王祠), honoring the man who drove out the Dutch. Open 08:30 to 17:30.
- Shuixian Temple. The small Shuixian Temple (水仙宮), deep inside its market, is the local pick most visitors miss. → Temples guide
- Evening in Anping. End at the Anping Kaitai Mazu Temple (安平開臺天后宮), open 05:00 to 22:00, then the harbor at sunset. → Anping half-day
Tips
- The times above are a pace, not a schedule. Linger where it feels right.
- Go in the morning: cooler, calmer, and you'll see the temples in daily use.
- Bring small change if you'd like to make an offering, and water for the walk.
