Tainan Food Crawl: A Day of Eating

This is a day built entirely around eating, in the order Tainan eats: beef soup at dawn, milkfish and congee for breakfast, a graze along Guohua Street at lunch, afternoon snacks, then a night market. Every shop below is one we already cover on our food pages, and the hours are the ones we list there. Thursday and Sunday are the best days to run it, because nearly every stop is open and the Garden Night Market is on.

Before you start: bring cash, come hungry, and order small. Hours change and stalls sell out, so check each shop's Google listing on the day.

Dawn (around 05:30): beef soup

Start with the city's signature dish, flash-cooked fresh beef in hot broth. Our steer is Shang Hao Chih Beef Soup (尚好吃牛肉湯), a Michelin Bib Gourmand pick at No. 6, Sec. 1, Beian Rd, North District. Have a bowl of braised pork rice alongside.

  • Hours: 04:00 to 12:00 (plus 17:00 to 21:00 Friday and Saturday); closed Tuesday. It can sell out early.
  • Swaps: Hsi Lo Tien (西羅殿), 04:30 to 13:00, closed Monday and Tuesday; or A Cun (阿村), 04:00 to 12:00, closed Monday.

Breakfast (around 07:30): milkfish or congee

Second breakfast is a Tainan tradition. A Xing Shi Mu Yu (阿興虱目魚) serves deboned milkfish belly, 07:30 to 14:00 daily. Or head to Dayong Street No Name Congee (大勇街無名鹹粥), No. 85, Dayong St, for seafood congee, 04:00 to 13:30, closed Monday.

Mid-morning: walk it off

You'll want a break. The temples around Yongfu Road are a short walk from the food streets. → Temple route

Lunch (from 11:30): Guohua Street and Yongle Market

The old town's main food artery. Graze rather than sit for one big meal.

  • Yi Wei Pin (一味品): savory rice pudding and milkfish thick soup, a two-item Bib Gourmand menu inside Yongle Market, No. 177, Sec. 3, Guohua Street. 05:00 to 17:00, closed Tuesday.
  • A Wen Rice Cake (阿文米粿): steamed rice cake pan-fried golden, with bamboo shoot pork sauce and a runny egg. No. 74, Baoan Rd. 08:30 to 22:00 daily.
  • Lo Cheng Migao (落成米糕): sticky rice with pork, the dish visitors keep skipping. 10:30 to 18:30, closed Wednesday; some days differ.

Midday: rest

Tainan hides from the afternoon heat, and so should you. An old-house cafe or your hotel is the right call.

Afternoon (from 14:30): shrimp rolls and something sweet

  • Huang Chia Shrimp Rolls (府城黃家蝦捲): crisp Bib Gourmand shrimp rolls, No. 268, Xihe Rd. 14:30 to 19:00, closed Friday and Saturday.
  • Babao Bin Yuan Zai Hui (八寶彬圓仔惠): sweet rice balls and shaved ice, a Bib Gourmand dessert stop. 09:00 to 22:00, closed Monday and Thursday.

Early evening (from 16:20): danzai noodles

A small bowl of the dish born in Tainan at Small Park Danzai Noodles (小公園擔仔麵), No. 321, Ximen Rd. 16:20 to 22:00, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Night: a night market, then eel noodles

The big markets rotate through the week, so pick the one that's open:

If you still have room, finish at A-Jiang Eel Noodles (阿江鱔魚意麵), No. 89, Sec. 3, Minzu Rd: wok-fired, sweet and sour, the taste of Tainan after dark. 17:00 to midnight, closed Monday.

Which day works

  • Thursday or Sunday: everything above is open except Babao Bin on Thursday, and Garden is running.
  • Tuesday: avoid. Shang Hao Chih, Yi Wei Pin and Small Park are all closed.
  • Friday or Saturday: swap Huang Chia's shrimp rolls for another Guohua Street snack.
