West of Chihkan Tower, a handful of streets hold the densest run of classic food in Tainan. Guohua Street (國華街) is the spine. Yongle Market (永樂市場), on the corner of Guohua Street and Minzu Road, is its heart. Zhengxing Street (正興街) is the short side street of younger shops and sweets, and one block over, Hai'an Road does art by day and bars by night, with Shennong Street just off it. Come hungry, carry cash and graze.

Guohua Street and Yongle Market
Yongle Market and the Shuixian Temple market run together, so this is really one big old market quarter, with the stalls spilling out along Guohua Street Section 3. The press call three of its oldest names the Guohua Street golden triangle:
- A Song Gua Bao (阿松割包), No. 181, Sec. 3, Guohua St. Steamed pork buns, made here for about 80 years, and often sold out by mid-afternoon. Closed Thursday.
- Fu Sheng Hao (富盛號), No. 11, Sec. 3, Minzu Rd. Founded in 1947, with a two-item menu: savory bowl rice cake (碗粿) and fish thick soup. Closed Thursday.
- Jin De Spring Rolls (金得春捲), No. 19, Sec. 3, Minzu Rd. About 70 years old, known for spring rolls filled with lima beans and shrimp. Sources disagree on the closing day, so check before you go.
Also in and around the market:
- Yi Wei Pin (一味品), inside Yongle Market at No. 177, Sec. 3, Guohua St. Michelin Bib Gourmand bowl rice cake and milkfish thick soup. 05:00 to 17:00, closed Tuesday.
- Fu Sheng Xiao Shi (福昇小食), No. 161, Sec. 3, Guohua St, on the market's corner. Stir-fried eel noodles, for over 50 years.
- Qiu Jia Calamari Rice Noodles (邱家小卷米粉), No. 251, Sec. 3, Guohua St. Squid and rice noodles in clear soup.
Further south, Guohua Street Section 2 has two more Michelin Bib Gourmand picks: Yeh Jia Calamari Rice Noodle (葉家小卷米粉) at No. 142 (08:30 to 15:00, closed Monday and Tuesday) and Babao Bin Yuan Zai Hui (八寶彬圓仔惠) at No. 99, for sweet rice balls and shaved ice (09:00 to 22:00, closed Monday and Thursday).
The small Shuixian Temple (水仙宮), dedicated to the sea deities, sits deep inside the market. → Temples guide
Zhengxing Street
Zhengxing Street is tiny, under 60 meters by one count. Global Views magazine reported that it was a forgotten alley until 2011, when a clothing shop opened and other young shops followed, and the shopkeepers began running street events and even a newspaper about the street. The two names that drew the queues back then were the Kinoya (蜷尾家) ice cream shop and the Taicheng Fruit Shop (泰成水果店) a lane away. Small shops here change often, so check what is open before you make a special trip.
West Market
The West Market (西市場), which locals call the Big Vegetable Market (大菜市), on Ximen Road, was once the largest food market in southern Taiwan. Today it is mostly a cloth market, good for bright Tainan-pattern fabrics, with food stalls tucked between the rows. Next to it, the Qiancao shopping lanes date from 1933, when shops were built around the market.
- Hours: 11:00 to 19:00 daily since it reopened on 21 August 2025 after restoration (SuperTaste, February 2026)
Hai'an Road
When Hai'an Road was widened, the buildings along it were cut in half, leaving raw walls of brick and steel. Artists turned those walls into public art, and the Hai'an Road Art Street (海安路藝術街) is now one of the busiest places in the city for an evening walk, with bars, drink stands and barbecue along it. Open any time; best after dark. At dawn, the same road has one of the city's legendary beef soup shops, Six Thousand, at No. 63, Sec. 1 (05:00 to 10:30, closed Tuesday to Thursday). → Beef soup guide
